Podcast: Violence in Genre Fiction

A couple of weeks ago I trailed a discussion on violence in genre fiction that I’d participated in for The Skiffy and Fanty Show. The podcast has gone up and is well worth checking out:

Ep. 154: Violence in Genre Fiction w/ Brad Beaulieu and Stephanie Saulter

The podcast was prompted by an Adam Callaway post on the overwhelming use of violence – and apparent lack of consequences therefrom – in much of fantasy. Brad and I were joined by Julia Rios and moderated by Shaun Duke. I got to big up Richard Morgan near the beginning (who I think does extreme violence extremely well – he shows the damage), and talk a little about Gemsigns near the end. In between we got stuck into the use, misuse and overuse of violence in science fiction, fantasy and horror. The discussion is fairly wide ranging; from about minute 38 we focus particularly on how sexual violence and violence against women are used as common and casual narrative devices.

Do give us a listen. I’d be interested to know your thoughts.
